The Bright Country: A Fisherman's Return to Trout, Wild Water, and Himself
Published in Paperback by Pruett Publishing Co. (October, 2000)
Authors: Harry Middleton and Russell Chatham
Average review score:

Small World
THE BRIGHT COUNTRY is a heartbreakingly beautiful, sad, hilarious, touching book that flows and burbles along like a favorite trout stream. I've probably bought 6-8 copies of the book over the years and loaned, given or otherwise forced it upon at least twice that number of people. It's not a perfect novel, but is easily the most honest look I've ever encountered into the heart of a guy I wish I'd had the opportunity to know. There's more than a little bit of trout fishing, but this is a book that hooks non-anglers as well.

A Bright Ending
I can't write Harry Middleton to tell him how much I admire his writing, or how much his stories and themes resonate in me. He died not long ago. And if I may quote Russell Chatham, "It hurts to know that Harry Middleton rode the back of a garbage truck every night during the wee hours to put groceries on his family's table." It's true. It's part of this story.

This is the moving, affecting story of Middleton's struggle with depression, his mother's death of brain cancer, and, most memorably, a blind trout on the South Fork of the Platte River. Like all of Middleton's books, the language is wonderful and the characters are memorable. Perhaps more so than most, this book is Middleton laying his soul bare, telling a story as it happened, cutting close to the bone.

And if flyfishing isn't the whole story here, it is part of the path to redemption.

Harry, we hardly knew you, and I wish there had been more time, and more books. But you will live on for me and for those readers who discover you. Ollie ollie oxen free.

All You Need To Know About Fasting
This Book has help me so much with fasting. Altough I've fast before I wanted to have my fasting not be in vain. This book answered a lot of questions that I had. It reviewd different eras in fasting. I wanted to start a study on prayer but God lead me to this book. It is not hard to read or filled with un-necessary college degree words. Both babes in Christ and more mature Christains will be blessed by this book.

Excellent overview of Biblical fasting and its results
I've studied fasting for several years, but have never seen an informative and clear work dealing with Biblical methods. The author not only presents fasting as a historical action, but also relates a number of modern fasts that resulted in miracles. This text is highly recommended for those who wish to be inspired and motivated, whether they be religious or not.

Making Game: An Essay on Woodcock
Published in Hardcover by Clark City Pr (01 December, 1990)
Authors: Guy De LA Valdene and Russell Chatham
Average review score:

A thinking man's guide to upland hunting
If you are looking for a how to book on woodcock and grouse hunting look elsewhere. Valdene spends a great deal of time painting a picture with very fine brush strokes. As you read you will smell the smells, feel the ground under foot and see the enviroment as it really is. This is not a book about hunting as much as it is a book about appreciating something. I have read it several times (it is an easy read) and I am sure I will read it again and again. There are technical aspects to the book. When you are finished you will know pretty much all there is to know about woodcock. From the singing grounds in March through migration in the late fall. You will definatly have an appreciation for this simple little bird.

Just ... EXECELLENT!
If you have/now, or hope to live in 'their' flight path ... enjoy this lovely book.

The reicpes, the family stories, the insights are profound!

We're in Lakeville, Maine ... And the stories are like home spun ... Enjoy!

The Naval War of 1812 (Chatham Pictorial Histories)
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (March, 1999)
Authors: Robert Gardiner and National Maritime Museum (Great Britain)
Average review score:

Excellent
Excellent book. Unfortunately it is brief, I wish it were 2 or 3 volumes. The information presented has been prepared by masters in their field. This book will have you researching more on the topics covered, because the topics are short yet powerful enough for you to want to know more.

The book also has short subjects on each of the British class of ship, but oddly one of the major classes is absent.

Fighting Afloat
This may first appear to be nothing but one of those historical 'picture books' and it is profusely illustrated, but it is much more than that. Well-research, historically correct text, and well-organized, it is one of the best books on the topic on the market today.

Robert Gardiner continues his study of naval warfare in the age of sail with this excellent study, covering the war at sea, the war on the lakes, privateers, and the arsoniistic adventures of the British Admirals, Cockburn and Cochrane, up and down the Chesapeake and the eastern seaboard of the United States, although this last is somewhat played down.

The early American frigate victories, the frantic shipbuilding and fighting on the Great Lakes, the sloop duels in the open sea, Porter's adventures in the pacific aboard the USS Essex, Lawrence losing the USS Chesapeake to HMS Shannon, while uttering the famous, 'Don't give up the ship!' which Perry later uses as his battle cry at the victory on Lake Erie, the famous and profitable voyages of the American privateer Prince de Neuchatel (a superb model of which is in the Smithsonian, by the way), all are thoroughly and colorfully covered in this must have volume on a little studied war.

It is in larger than normal format, and looks something like a coffee table book, but don't be fooled. The narrative is exciting, facts not commonly in evidence are chronicled here, and the illustrations are superb. This is a must buy and a must have.

The Thinking Game: A Guide to Effective Study (Chatham House Studies in Political Thinking)
Published in Paperback by Chatham House Publishers (February, 1988)
Author: Eugene J. Meehan
Average review score:

essential reading
This book should be the standard text of a course in critical thinking taught in every high school in this country. The citizens of the United States need a book like this as a way of teaching people how to sort out the deluge of opinion and cant that spews out of every orifice of the media. Somebody please get this book back into print!

The best book on Critical Thinking I have ever seen.
This is the true use of critical thinking written by a political scientist. It presents a down to earth practical application of critical thinking. The type of thinking we all should use to make inportant choices.

The secret of success...
Wow, after 20 years in the hardest game in the woorld (I.T.) (not without some success), I always felt that I knew the answers and the others didn't understand. I could never figure out why nobody valued what I did as highly as I did.

Now I know, this book tells it all and you can read it in a day or two.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for anyone in IT who feels misunderstood and undervalued. Use this book to get promoted within a year.

The First Destroyers (Chatham Shipshape Series)
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (March, 1997)
Authors: David Lyon and John Roberts
Average review score:

An excellent appraisal of the original TBDs.
David Lyon writes an interesting book, and reproduces about as much as is possible on the elements in the rapid development of the English TBD. The gaps in this work are caused by the gaps in the Royal Navy records, not by David Lyon. I look forward to successors to this work.
